How many recruiters end up at their client’s wedding on Christmas Eve?
I was working on a Vermont-based VP Engineering position for a business client and reached out to a great candidate living in Germany. He was happy to consider a position in the US, but didn’t know anything about Vermont. In addition to working diligently to make sure both parties’ needs were being met in regards to the position, I researched all manner of cultural topics for him so that he could make a fully informed decision.
We got to know each other very well in a few short months. He was half joking one day, early on, and complained that Vermont didn’t have his favorite restaurant chain. I asked what he liked about it and then sent him a list of local restaurants I thought he’d come to love instead. It became a game – he would mention something he loved to do, and I would research and send him local recommendations and information.
As negotiations advanced and started to become serious, I researched the best school districts, rental market, housing prices, guitar teachers and professional networking organizations in the area. I also helped him evaluate the three opportunities he was fielding – only one of them was from me. Happily, he ended up accepting the Vermont position and moved shortly after. His girlfriend arrived from Germany a couple of months later and my husband and I joined the two of them on Christmas Eve to celebrate their wedding!
